Romania joins an unprecedented global movement to reduce single-use plastic

On 1 July 2026, millions of people across more than 190 countries are invited to take part in the Plastic Free Pledge, an initiative aiming to bring together the largest number of people refusing single-use plastic in a single day. More than a symbolic action, the initiative seeks to demonstrate that behavioral changes adopted simultaneously by millions of people can become a powerful driver of social transformation and environmental protection.

This year, Romania once again joins Plastic Free July, one of the world’s leading campaigns dedicated to reducing the consumption of single-use plastics. Citizens, businesses, public institutions, schools, universities, and non-governmental organizations are invited to participate in the Plastic Free Pledge by making one simple commitment: giving up one single-use plastic item and replacing it with a reusable alternative.

This year’s initiative goes beyond raising awareness. Organizers aim to make 1 July a landmark moment for the global movement to combat plastic pollution by demonstrating the scale of the international community supporting the transition toward more responsible consumption.

Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in oceans, rivers, soils, and natural environments, where they persist for hundreds of years, harming ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. While the scale of the problem may seem overwhelming, experience over recent years has shown that widespread behavioral change can significantly reduce the consumption of single-use products and influence how businesses and public authorities respond to the growing demand for more sustainable solutions.

On 1 July, participants are encouraged to choose one single-use plastic item they can eliminate from their daily lives—whether it is a plastic water bottle, takeaway coffee cup, shopping bag, disposable cutlery, food container, or another commonly used product—and register their commitment through the Plastic Free Pledge at https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/pledge/. In doing so, each individual action becomes part of a global movement sending a clear message about people’s willingness to actively contribute to reducing plastic pollution.

Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, Founder of Plastic Free July, highlights the significance of this moment:

“Plastic Free July demonstrates every year that change can begin with simple actions. On 1 July 2026, we have the opportunity to show the world that millions of people are ready to refuse single-use plastic and embrace more sustainable alternatives. Every choice sends a powerful message about the future we want to create. Together, we can reduce plastic pollution and build more responsible and resilient communities for future generations.”

In Romania, the initiative is coordinated by Green PR Global, a communications agency specializing in sustainability and positive impact.

Mădălina Sandu, Founder & CEO of Green PR Global and Professor of Sustainability, believes Romania’s participation represents far more than joining an international campaign.

“In recent years, we have seen that more and more people are willing to change their habits once they understand the impact of their choices. The Plastic Free Pledge provides an opportunity to transform an individual action into a large-scale collective movement. If millions of people choose to take the same step on the same day, the outcome goes beyond symbolism and demonstrates that environmental responsibility can become the norm rather than the exception. Romania can contribute to this global message through the involvement of each and every one of us.”

Participation is open to everyone and simply involves choosing one single-use plastic item to give up, registering that commitment through the Plastic Free Pledge, and encouraging others to do the same.
