In the context of strengthening the Deposit Return System (DRS), TOMRA is launching in Romania a new reverse vending system – TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus, a solution developed for outdoor operation in challenging weather conditions such as rain, hail, snow, or direct sunlight.
Durability and reliable outdoor operation
With the launch of TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus, the company continues its series of technological innovations dedicated to outdoor operation, especially in high-traffic areas where retailers aim to optimize indoor space while offering consumers easy access to return points.
The system is based on TOMRA Flow™ technology, which supports a continuous and fast return flow, providing a simplified experience for consumers and efficient processes for return point operators.
TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus is built for reliable outdoor operation, designed to withstand temperature variations and direct exposure to harsh weather conditions. Its steel housing, galvanized metal roof, and electrostatic powder coating ensure durability and long-term performance. The high-visibility touchscreen remains easy to use even in bright light.
The system is equipped with large-capacity bins, compliant with the requirements of the DRS administrator – RetuRO Deposit Return System – reducing the frequency of staff intervention in stores.
The modular design allows for extended functionality, including the integration of an additional module.
The new system accepts all DRS packaging types: plastic, glass, and metal, thus supporting the efficient expansion of collection infrastructure in the context of DRS development.
The solution was also showcased at EuroShop 2026, the world’s leading retail trade fair, held in Düsseldorf, within the retail technology section.
“Through the launch of TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus, we provide a flexible and efficient solution for return point operators, at a time when the DRS network is expanding and diversifying nationwide. Our goal is to support retailers and operators with robust, easy-to-use technologies aligned with market needs. We are constantly attentive to market demands, which allows us once again to deliver a solution requested and anticipated by retailers,” said Dorin Mihai, General Manager, TOMRA Collection Romania.
The local market needs outdoor packaging collection solutions
As the Deposit Return System continues to develop, return points are needed in an increasing number of locations. In this context, solutions designed for outdoor operation become essential for strengthening the collection infrastructure.
The launch of TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus is part of TOMRA’s strategy to introduce technologies tailored to the needs of the local market, retailers, and consumers.
According to the study “DRS Habits and Attitudes,” conducted by TOMRA Collection Romania, most Romanians return their packaging weekly. The average number of items returned per session is 50. 33% of consumers return packaging once a week, while 13% do so 2–3 times per week.
TOMRA awarded Gold iF Design Award 2026
The company’s innovation direction is further confirmed by the international recognition obtained this year: the TOMRA R2 system received the prestigious Gold iF Design Award 2026.
This distinction highlights both the efficiency of the collection technology and the quality of the return experience offered to consumers.
The competition is organized by iF International Forum Design GmbH in Hanover, one of the world’s oldest independent design organizations. In 2026, more than 10,000 entries were submitted, of which only 75 received the Gold award.
